If I could write sci-fi, I'd actually make a story with the preface. Thought it'd be a good idea.
Still, this idea gelled around a couple of other stories I've read (not necessarily here), and I thought I'd take a crack at it.
There is BE, apologies, but it's a while before it shows up. Put some other things in to keep people's attention until you get there...;)

Nicely done, plenty of buildup. Very odd concept with the time-travel, but backed up well enough to work. You may want to dive into stuff happening a little quicker, since the intro was sorta long and largely irrelevant to what actually goes on in the story (if interesting none the less), but overall it's solidly put together and an fun read.

This story echoes of Frederik Pohl's Heechee series (6 books) written from the 70s to the 90s. You should check them out, seriously.

Well done! Some minor punctuation problems, but not in any way distractive. A very entertaining story.
