As a technical issue, ODT is a terrible format to choose for uploads. If a reader doesn't have OpenOffice installed, it's a real pain to open.
Just choose to save the file as RTF or PDF and it will be much easier for people to read it at all. You can use OpenOffice for that.

Permission or not i have never really been a big fan of people using other peoples stories. What we need to ask ourselves is if there is a fine indelible line dividing writing an ode to another story, or just flat out plagiarism. Or do they cross one into the other at the slightest turn of events? I don't know why you felt you had to take a perfectly good story, change it, and then throw it out as if it was your own. In all honesty from what i read you did not really change all that much, if anything, and what you did change was not all that great or necessary. Just stick to writing your own material, because it is your own material that really counts for anything.
Please give the authors feedback, I can not emphasize enough how important it is to them.
